Kenny's Corner #26 - Dustin Drews
17.04.2019 kl. 19.30 - 22.00
Saxophonist Dustin Drews is a highly adept improviser whose off-the-cuf and emotionally charged delivery finds its place within the scope of melodic and experimental post-bop. Born in Houston,Texas, Drew grew up learning music with his brother. His former educa-ion started at The High School for the Performing and Visual Arts in Houston, a school that has produced such notable players as Jason Moan, Kendrick Scott, Mike Moreno, Robert Glasper and Eric Harland.
Afterwards Drews attended the University of Miami on a full scholarship and later the University of Northern Colorado for his masters. During this time he received numerous awards and honorable mentions from Downbeat and ASCAP. Throughout Drews has grown under the private tutelage of David Liebman, Davis Caceres, Gary Keller and Andrew Dahlke. The list also includes Jim White, Ron Miller, Todd DelGuidice, Curtis Fuller, Winard Harper and George Cables, many of these during his stay at the Betty Carter Jazz Ahead program.
Drews currently resides in Berlin, where he is involved in many projects. Drews long awaited debut album, "Controversy", is a tally of influences and concepts touching on lyricism, microtonal structures, tradition and odd meters; a lyrically agressive post-bop jazz album.
